Position
Head of the Institut Mutualiste pour l’Environnement et la Solidarité (Crédit Mutuel Alliance
Fédérale)
Laurent Berger is a leading figure in French and European trade unionism. After studying history, he
worked as a job counsellor and quickly became involved in trade unionism within the Confédération
française démocratique du travail (CFDT), one of France's largest trade unions.
He joined the CFDT in 1996, working on issues related to employment and youth. He gradually rose
through the ranks of the union, becoming Secretary General of the CFDT in 2012, a position he held
until 2023. Under his leadership, the CFDT established itself as the leading trade union in France. Mr
Berger has focused on issues such as labour, pension reform, the fight against social inequality and
the strengthening of social dialogue between trade unions, employers and the government. From
2019 to 2023, he was the president of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).
In September 2023, he joined the banking and insurance group Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérale, to
spearhead the creation of a centre of expertise on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)
issues. Since its operational launch in March 2024, Laurent Berger has headed the Crédit Mutuel
Alliance Fédérale’s Institut mutualiste pour l'environnement et la solidarité (Mutualist Institute for
the Environment & Solidarity), whose mission is to implement the group's ESG ambitions based on
the Institute’s expertise, while ensuring the consistency of action and coordination of all
stakeholders. The aim is to support all business lines and elected members in these environmental
and solidarity-based transformations, in the service of the group's customers.
Since April 2025, he has also been Chairman of the Board of Directors of CIC Ouest.
